There seems to be a lot of change with Merrick recently. What is going on?+

We call it a "Real Food Revolution." For the past few years we've been perfecting our recipes by using cutting-edge nutritional research, constantly reviewing supply partners and conducting quality assurance by our expert panel of dog and cat taste-testers. In doing so, we have created 12 world-class dog food recipes that are under the Classic and Grain Free brands. In addition, we are introducing a new line of cat food, Purrfect Bistro, to the marketplace this summer. What kind of protein is used in the Classic and Grain Free recipes?+

We only use high-quality, deboned meats sourced from USDA-inspected facilities. As you may know, dogs thrive on quality protein and fat, which we use at 30 to 38 percent protein levels in nearly all our dry food recipes.

What kinds of ingredients make up your recipes?+

At Merrick, we believe dogs and cats deserve real food. Our new recipes offer high protein in its purest state. Our recipes start with a deboned meat protein as the No. 1 ingredient.  We use USDA-inspected real meat to provide the essential amino acids pets need. Canned or dry, for cat or dog, all our recipes are made in America with no artificial sweeteners; no colorings or preservatives; no grain fillers; and no ingredients sourced from China. For dogs, we include omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, or healthy fats, to provide energy. Also, we have significant levels of glucosamine and chondroitin for healthy bones and joints.  We only use fresh fruits and vegetables, and whole grains to enhance nutrition. For cats, we include omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids for healthy skin and fur. Every new recipe is 100 percent grain free. We use real deboned meat as the No. 1 ingredient, with a minimum of 70 percent protein and fat ingredients in every dry food bag.

Why is brown rice the main whole grain in the Classic dog food recipes?+

Brown rice is the main whole grain in our Classic recipes because not only does it taste better, but it also maintains a substantial nutritional advantage over heavily processed white rice, corn, wheat and soy. Whole brown rice naturally retains significantly higher levels of fiber, B vitamins and vital minerals. It's highly digestible and helps support the immune system.

Do Merrick’s recipes contain fillers and chemicals?+

We are committed to using only the purest ingredients in our recipes. Our recipes contain no ingredients from China; no poultry byproducts; no artificial additives or preservatives; no artificial flavors or colors; no corn, wheat or soy; and no glutens. We've excluded these ingredients because we believe pet food should be fuel, not filler.

Why did you choose sweet potatoes as your main vegetable in the Grain Free recipes?+

Sweet potatoes are a rich source of dietary fiber, natural sugars, complex carbohydrates, protein, carotenoids, vitamin C, iron and calcium.

What does Merrick do to ensure that the ingredients maintain their freshness?+

Merrick primarily uses ingredients that are grown by American farmers and ranchers to ensure freshness and food safety. With fewer distributors, handlers and warehouses involved, the farm-grown ingredients we use can get to our kitchen faster, ensuring fresher food for your pets.

Why did Merrick change its recipes?+

The Merrick Real Food Revolution revolves around using the healthiest natural foods for our pets. Since the emphasis is on the food, we want the packaging and the names to reflect what pet parents would want to prepare for their pets in their own kitchen using the healthiest, nutrient-rich ingredients. We want pet parents to immediately know the major ingredients in the recipe.

What is the difference between grain-based and grain-free dog foods?+

Some pets develop food intolerances or food allergies and grains can be difficult for a pet's stomach and intestines to break down. If your pet has a sensitive stomach, our Grain Free recipes can help their digestive system problems. At Merrick, our Grain Free recipes feature higher levels of proteins, omegas, glucosamine and chondroitin.

Where are Merrick recipes made?+

All of our recipes are cooked in our test kitchen and plants in Hereford, Texas. Our five-star kitchens and manufacturing facilities uphold strict guidelines defined by the FDA.  We continue to further enhance our food safety performance and quality management systems by partnering with NSF Cooke and Thurber, Safe Quality Food and HAACP.

What is the difference between small breed and large breed recipes? Are there any nutritional differences?+

Both the small breed and large breed recipes have the same nutritious, real whole food ingredients. Both recipes have suggested feeding guides based on your dog's goal weight. The small breed recipes have a smaller kibble and the large breed recipes have a bigger kibble. Both kibble sizes and shapes are qualified by research as best for the canine jaw structure and eating habits.

I noticed bones are in some of the canned recipes. Why is this good for my pet when I’ve been told for years not to give bones to my pets?+

Our Smothered Comfort, Wingaling and Gameday Tailgate recipes contain chicken thighs and wing bones. Our slow-cooked whole chicken thighs and wings offer marinated tender chicken cooked on a softened bone. This special process makes bones soft, completely safe, and dogs love the flavor. What are the benefits of introducing canned foods into a dog’s diet?+

The primary benefit of introducing canned food recipes into a dog's diet is to strengthen pet parents' relationship during feeding time. Pet parents will be able to enjoy the deep satisfaction of providing their pet with a variety of healthy, nutritious and wholesome recipes. Canned food is also soft on a dog's teeth, easy on the stomach and adds moisture that supports digestive system health. It helps pet parents control the portion size and assists in maintaining their pet's optimal weight.

Do Merrick’s dog recipes include MSG?+

We're proud to say that we do not use monosodium glutamate, also known as MSG, in any of our dog or cat recipes. This includes no MSG in any of our natural flavoring ingredients.

What is the Merrick Real Food Revolution doing for cats?+

Why is Merrick declaring a Real Food Revolution?+

For the past few years, we've been reinventing our recipes to help pet parents nourish their cats with a healthy diet of high-quality nutrition. Cats' unique physiology makes them carnivores - meaning high-quality protein sources should be a significant part of their diets. Our new Purrfect Bistro recipes use real deboned meat as the No. 1 ingredient, in tastes and textures cats want and need.

Why should cat lovers join the revolution and how can we sign up?+

Pet parents are invited to join the revolution on Facebook to receive updates on the new recipes. Also, they can share photos of their felines to help them "meow" the news about the revolution to their fellow cat and human friends.
