Quality nutrition you can trust
Merrick is also backed by the nutritional pioneers in the pet food industry. As a Nestlé Purina PetCare business unit, we have access to unparalleled research, experience and resources. Their team of more than 500 nutritionists, veterinarians, behaviorists and researchers around the world are always working to discover nutritional breakthroughs to help advance the lives of pets and help ensure we are delivering high quality, safe nutrition you can rely on for your dog or cat.
Crafted with love for over 30 years
Back in 1988, we got our start in Garth Merrick’s family kitchen and continue to operate our own canneries and dry food production facility in Hereford, Texas. As we say down in Hereford, “this isn’t our first rodeo” – we’ve been delivering the best food ever for the best pets ever for more than 30 years.
RuthAnn Lobos, DVM, CCRT, CVAT
Dr. RuthAnn brings more than 15 years’ experience in the pet food industry. She loves sharing the power of pet nutrition with colleagues, pet parents and friends – quality nutrition can make a visible difference in the appearance and activity of dogs and cats and can strengthen the amazing relationships we share with them. In her undergraduate studies, Dr. RuthAnn pursued an animal science degree. She went on to receive her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (D.V.M.) from Louisiana State University (Geaux Tigers!). She pursued additional training to become a certified therapist in both canine rehabilitation and veterinary acupuncture. She is an avid marathoner and triathlete and proud mama to three active pups, Rigolets, Stella and Finn. Director of Research and Development
Kevin has been formulating and testing pet food for more than 21 years and is committed to ensuring every recipe delivers the complete and balanced nutrition our pets need. He joined Merrick in 2015 to lead product research, innovation and development. Prior to his current role, he managed product development for several Nestlé Purina brands and served as a production manager at various manufacturing facilities within the Purina network. Kevin received his Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in agriculture engineering, food processing specialty and biochemistry. And, with two dogs at home, his four-legged family members – Jasper and Nikki – are happy to help Kevin with any extra research needs!
Research and Development Manager
Janika joined the Merrick team in 2016, and our team quickly realized that her background in the human food industry coupled with her passion for pets is a powerful combination. She received her Master of Science (M.S.) in nutritional biochemistry with a concentration in functional food product development and a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in food science and technology with minors in animal science and chemistry. Whether in the R&D house in Hereford, at her home or around town, her sweet and loyal pups – Roscoe (pictured) and Cookie – can always be found by her side.
Kerry Cramer, Ph.D.
Kerry has more than 17 years’ experience in animal nutrition. He is responsible for reviewing Merrick formulas to ensure they deliver the nutrition a dog or cat needs to thrive. He’s been a Research Nutritionist with Nestlé Purina PetCare since 2015 and is fully dedicated to the Merrick business. Prior to his current role, he served as a companion nutritionist for a global leader in animal nutrition where he was responsible for suppling vitamins, minerals and other nutraceuticals to the petfood industry. Kerry received his Ph.D. and Master of Science (M.S.) in animal nutrition from Kansas State University and a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in animal sciences from University of Illinois. Pets have always been an important part of Kerry’s life, and his current pup Molly is no exception.

She received her Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in animal sciences as well as a variety of well-regarded quality certifications including PCQI, Better Process Control School and HACCP. Like Katie, her dog, Hondo and Dally, loves following a routine and appreciates that every bowl of our Texas Beef & Sweet Potato recipe looks and tastes the same!
Morgan might be our newest team member, but she isn’t new to pet nutrition. She has always been passionate about designing complete and balanced recipes that meet a pet’s specific nutritional needs and shares our company’s commitment to improving the lives of pets. Prior to Merrick, she was responsible for providing nutritional direction for hundreds of quality pet food diets and treats. Morgan has a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in animal science from California State Polytechnic University Pomona. A self-proclaimed “cat person,” she is always looking for ways to make the best food possible for her two cats, Waylon and Jolene (pictured).
Melissa Brookshire, DVM
Since 2012, Dr. Brookshire has been an extension of our team, providing training and educational support for our team and acting as a consultant on nutrition and regulatory compliance. Her team of veterinarians works closely with our team to help us address any nutrition or dietary questions we receive from pet parents. Dr. Brookshire received her undergraduate degree in International Studies from the University of Missouri – Columbia and instead of moving to Paris, stayed in Columbia to pursue veterinary school. After receiving her DVM from the College of Veterinary Medicine, she practiced in a small animal hospital and then co-owned a mixed animal practice in rural Missouri before leaving practice to begin working in the pet food industry. She started her own firm in 2007, providing veterinary and regulatory consulting services to the pet food industry. She lives in Colorado with her dog, Eric, and loves everything outdoors – hiking, trail running, skiing, camping and climbing mountains.

Dr. Elam received a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in nutrition and Master of Science (M.S.) in meat science.
